How often should gutters be cleaned in Delaware?
A standard home in Delaware needs two visits a year, timed around the winter freeze. The first window falls in late November, before the freeze sets in, and the second in late May, after seed drop finishes. Oak, red maple, tulip poplar and sycamore shed leaves into the gutters from late October through mid November, then maple seeds come down again in May, with summer thunderstorms adding more debris in between.
Heavily treed homes, especially those shaded by mature oak or maple, follow the same November and May windows, but the gap between visits shrinks, since a full canopy fills gutters faster than an open lot does over the same stretch. Freezes from December through February are what make a full gutter dangerous here, forming ice dams on shaded roofs that force water back under the shingles instead of down the downspouts.
