How often should gutters be cleaned in Utah?
Utah gutters need one to two cleanings a year, for snow and monsoon season.
Around Salt Lake City and Provo, standard homes get two cleanings a year, early October before the first snow and May once the spring melt clears, with cottonwood, green ash and aspen leaves piling up as the main source of debris, especially where blue spruce needles collect in the valleys.
In the desert areas of southern Utah, one to two cleanings a year is enough, in June before the monsoon arrives and October once the storms pass, since palo verde, mesquite and desert willow shed lightly and dust settles faster than leaves ever do.
Skipping gutter maintenance where ice dams form does the most damage to a full gutter, forcing snowmelt under the shingles instead of down the downspouts.
