How often should gutters be cleaned in North Carolina?
North Carolina needs two to three gutter visits a year, around leaf fall and pollen. In the Piedmont around Charlotte and Raleigh, standard homes get two cleanings: late November once oak, hickory and sweetgum leaves are down, and April after the pine and oak pollen clears. Homes under loblolly pine add a third visit, since pine needles keep falling into the gutters and downspouts. Summer thunderstorms and a run of winter freezes, sometimes with ice, add to the debris that collects between cleanings.
Near Wilmington on the coast, standard homes clean twice too, in April and December, but live oak sets the calendar: it sheds in March, then again in November with the rest of the canopy. Hurricane season runs June to November here, and humid summers bring tropical downpours that fill a gutter fast. Across the state, a full gutter meets either a winter ice storm inland or hurricane rain on the coast, and either one sends water over the fascia edge, which is why gutter maintenance on a fixed schedule matters.
