How often should gutters be cleaned in New Jersey?
New Jersey needs two gutter visits a year, around nor'easters and seed drop. In northern New Jersey, near the New York line, standard homes clean twice: mid November, ahead of the hard freeze that runs into March, and late May, once the maple seed drop clears. Sugar maple, red oak, birch and white pine shed here through mid October into early November, and nor'easters pile snow on top of the debris already collecting in the trough.
Farther south, around Trenton, the same two-visit rhythm holds, but later: late November ahead of the freeze, and late May after the seed drop. Oak, red maple, tulip poplar and sycamore are the trees to watch, and on shaded roofs winter ice dams can form even with a lighter freeze that runs December to February, while summer thunderstorms push whatever is left into the downspouts.
