How often should gutters be cleaned in Colorado?

The first window falls in early October, before the season's first snow, and the second in May, once the spring melt is over. Cottonwood, green ash, aspen and blue spruce all drop leaves and needles into the gutters between late September and October, and dry mountain air on either side of that window keeps debris from breaking down on its own.
Heavily treed homes, especially those shaded by mature cottonwood or aspen, follow the same October and May windows, but the gap between visits shrinks, since a full canopy fills gutters faster than an open lot does over the same stretch. Snow from October through April is what makes a full gutter dangerous in Colorado: it backs up, freezes at the edge of the roof and forms ice dams that force water under the shingles instead of down the downspouts.
